IP address explained

An Internet Protocol address is a numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication.

An IP address serves two main functions: host or network interface identification and location addressing. 

This article seeks to explain what IP address is all about.

Networking is about connecting people, sharing ideas and collaborating remotely.

It is no wonder, the Internet, sometimes is called the network of networks.

This is based upon one simple principle: transferring information from one computer to another.

Interestingly, In order to transfer information from one computer to another: each computer needs an identity which is called the “Internet Protocol address” (or IP address for short)

Whenever you see the word IP address, one may imagine lots of network cables crisscrossing one PC to another.

Illustratively, an IP address is similar to a telephone number or street address.

The IP address is personally identifiable information that is automatically captured by another computer when any communications link is made over the Internet.

This includes visiting (or surfing) web pages, sending or receiving e-mail, visiting newsgroups, or using a chat room etc.

Computers connected to the Internet must speak the “Internet language” called the “Internet Protocol” or put simply “IP.”

To confirm the above: If you are using the internet on a mobile phone, then you can go to your WiFi settings to find out the IP address.

For iOS users, you can find the IP address by clicking on the ‘i‘ button next to the network they are connected to.

Android users can click on the network name in their WiFi settings, and it will show the IP address.

Ambiguities in user identification by IP address are reduced by the use of “Internet cookies.” These are text files that gives users a unique identity.
