What are the types of intranet?

An intranet is a computer network set up for sharing information, collaboration tools, operational systems, and other computing services within an organization, usually to the exclusion of access by outsiders.

The term intranet is used in contrast to public networks, such as the Internet.

Intranet can be considered as Private Network on some system software.

However, both intranet and the internet uses most of the same technology based on the Internet Protocol Suite.

This article shall explore the types of intranet.

It is important to know that there are three types of intranets, namely:

  • Collaboration intranet platforms
  • Internal website and
  • distributed intranet

Interestly, these intranet platforms are very different, and vary in operations within the organisation or enterprise the intranet is set up to run.

The collaboration intranet platform

This type of intranet is largely focused on two-way publishing.

This means that Users publish just as much as they consume.

This type of intranet is big on discussion forums and other ways to people especially employees connect with each other.

It is noteworthy that Information tends to be less formal, more conversational in collaboration intranet platforms.

The internal Web site

This type of intranet platform is based on one-way publishing hence it is more strict, formal and secured than the collaborative intranet platform.

People who interact with this platform are broadly divided into two groups: consumers and publishers.

There is a defined “admin side” set up to this intranet platform which comparitively few people have access.

Information is reviewed before it’s published, and it’s often subject to workflow and approvals within the organisation or enterprise.

The intranet is structured just like a public Web site (or internet), but intranet is set up behind the firewall. This makes intranet a Private Network.

The Distributed intranet

In larger organizations or enterprise, the  intranet set up very quickly becomes decentralized.

Hence most organization may end up not with a single, definable “intranet,” but with dozens or even hundreds of small applications (e.g. – a phone directory, an announcements system, a document library) that can be grouped around common infrastructure, like a centralized user database (often LDAP or Active Directory), and a centralized store of design elements so all the mini-applications can look the same.

LDAP stands for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. As the name suggests, it is a lightweight client-server protocol for accessing directory services, specifically X. 500-based directory services. 

LDAP runs over TCP/IP or other connection oriented transfer services hence compatible with distribution intranet.

The Distributed intranet as the name implies distribute information sharing that cater for each department of the organisation or enterprise.

This means each department of the organisation has an intranet that employees in that department can share information amongst themselves.
